HR in the Age of AI: What the Data Says and What Next

This well attended webinar in November explored how AI is transforming HR, the barriers organisations face, and the practical steps HR leaders can take to drive effective adoption. The session was led by David Gibbens from The Hackett Group and facilitated by Alex.

David outlined the rapid acceleration of AI, particularly large language models, and the increasing expectations placed on HR, despite flat or shrinking team sizes. HR is now under pressure to deliver more with fewer resources while aligning workforce planning and people strategy more closely with business objectives.

He highlighted current uses of AI across talent acquisition and HR service delivery, including resume screening, job description drafting, interview process support, and chatbot led Tier 0 and Tier 1 employee queries. While these tools deliver clear efficiency gains, they also create challenges such as reduced differentiation between candidates in highly automated processes.

Key barriers to scaling AI include limited HR skills, low change readiness, poor data quality, and the high failure rate of AI pilots when they do not address real business problems. David stressed that successful organisations start small, focus on specific challenges, and secure strong stakeholder sponsorship.

Case studies demonstrated the tangible impact of AI, with examples including AI agents integrated into ServiceNow and internal chatbots built on organisational data, both resulting in improved engagement and reduced time spent on HR tasks.

Looking ahead, David explained that HR operating models are shifting towards cross functional, skills based structures, with AI embedded into strategic workforce planning. High quality data, upskilling, and reskilling remain critical foundations.

David closed with practical guidance: assess AI readiness honestly, prioritise solving real business problems, start small and scale what works, and ensure senior stakeholder support throughout.
