How to start your HR career in Financial Services

Considering a career in HR within Financial Services? As HR Recruiters for the financial services industry, we are often asked by candidates what to expect and if we have any advice for those looking to make the move into this fast-paced industry.

Financial services is a highly rewarding sector to work in and is often associated with good earning potential. Large, well-structured organisations often provide excellent training and career development, and it’s not uncommon for organisations to sponsor employees to continue further education in order to gain qualifications that will help boost their skills and career development. One such HR qualification is the CIPD (The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development), which is a professional association for Human Resource management professionals. No matter what industry you work in, a Human Resources department is a critical component of employee well-being in any business, no matter how small, and it takes certain characteristics to be a good HR Professional. Excellent communication skills are paramount, as well as the ability to be impartial and objective in situations. Another crucial skill set for any HR professional is the ability to problem solve, negotiate and manage conflict. The HR department are often seen as ambassadors, and will partner with the business to add value from a commercial point of view. They emulate the values of the organisation and are privy to sensitive company information, as well as being relied upon to be trustworthy and discreet.

The Financial Services industry has been known as one of the more difficult industries to get into due to the tough criteria candidates need to meet. In the past, you would need a good academic degree from a red brick university to even stand a chance. Good academics will always be an advantage no matter what industry you choose but we’re pleased to say that times are beginning to change, and financial organisations have opened their eyes to the amazing talent out there, with many organisations now offering school leaver programmes.

If you enjoy a corporate environment and prepared to put in the hard work then the rewards of working in HR within Financial Services are huge! Please contact CandiceMartens@oakleafpartnership.com to discuss our current opportunities within the Financial & Professional Services sector.
