The Verdantix Green Quadrant Sustainability Business Consulting report examined the views of 14 major buyers from firms in the consulting market, with combined revenues of £134bn ($214bn).
PwC’s Sustainability & Climate Change services were shown to have the highest levels of awareness and also ranked highest for the strength of their sustainable business expertise. The firm’s sustainability reporting, change management and due diligence capabilities led other sustainability consulting firms active in the UK market, with strong scores also for the firm’s supply chain, corporate growth and sustainability strategy expertise.
The Verdantix report found that the UK policy and competitive dynamics were strong influences on the market, with a shift from carbon and CSR project investment pre 2008, towards ‘cautious investment’ in projects to provide competitive positioning today. As organisations work to change their overall business model, rather than just individual assets, the report predicts a gradual switch from project based work to transformational programmes after 2013.
“First and foremost, sustainability consulting is dealing with very practical issues and concerns for business and policy makers around energy security, natural resources, reputation, supply chain, financing, shareholder value,” said Malcolm Preston, global leader, PwC sustainability and climate change.
“Five years ago, a CSR strategy seemed forward thinking. Now, businesses are looking at co-ordinated, multi-layered response strategies that could take in climate change, biodiversity, social impact, regulation, energy usage, recruitment, brand, supply chain and commodities,” he added.
The global PwC team of over 700 includes environmental and climate scientists, economists, specialists in finance, M&A, insurance, reporting, behavioural change, supply chain, international development, agriculture, water, green fraud and carbon trading. The UK team has tripled in size since 2008, and leads the firm’s global sustainability and climate change network.
