How do we avoid unconscious bias when recruiting?

On Tuesday 30th April, we were fortunate enough to hold a fantastic event with 15 HR and Recruitment professionals for leading Retail brands. With employers becoming more mindful of diversity and inclusion in the workplace, comes with it questions, such as how do we ensure avoiding unconscious bias when recruiting?

The discussion was led by James Webb from Global Brands Group who introduced a very current and increasingly apparent issue in recruitment, commenting, “everyone has an unconscious bias but it is recognising what that is and realising how we can break this down”.

Themes discussed included setting CV length parameters, using blind CV’s of various degrees, supportive technologies and unconscious bias within the talent space in relation to internal promotions, development and recognition.

The morning highlighted that most have been exposed to the idea of unconscious bias in the workplace and are very much at the beginning stages of introducing strategies and technologies in tackling unconscious bias in recruitment.

We had fantastic feedback from the event and would like to thank James for leading this topic which will continue to be relevant across all industries and disciplines as we go through in 2019.

If you would like some more information on any of the above themes or events we hold at Oakleaf, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
