After four years at university in Liverpool and on exchange in Rhode Island, I emerged with a degree in American Studies. A brief spell in advertising sales for a newspaper group led to a move into finance recruitment.
I spent over 10 years recruiting in the Bristol, Leeds and Cardiff markets with a large multinational and then regional independent business. Over that time I progressed from raw graduate to Manager. I moved to London in August 2011 to take up a fantastic opportunity with Oakleaf where I now manage the permanent team recruiting into Financial & Professional Services. I’m excited to lead and be part of a great team in a developing organisation with a superb reputation for service and innovation. I recruit HR professionals into the Financial & Professional Services sector and am motivated by using my open approach, networks and focus on excellent customer service to build strong working relationships with clients and candidates.
Away from the office I like to play tennis (fairly averagely), travel, watch lots of sport and explore London with friends and my two children. My mildly fanatical support of Liverpool FC means I always keep a cautiously optimistic yet realistic eye out on their results.

Experts challenge HR and L&D to rethink their assumptions
A whole lot of external influences - including globalisation, market uncertainty, generational shifts and technology - are redefining what employees want from their careers. Speakers at this week’s Future Talent Conference - held at the decidedly unfuturistic Royal Opera House in London - challenged HR and L&D professionals to re-think their basic assumptions on talent management. Experts highlighted the following five areas where HR might be going wrong:
Service oriented, honest, and highly competent: Gareth Evans epitomises the characteristics of a true professional in the recruitment space. I had the pleasure of working with Gareth as he represented me in my first job search in London. He spent time understanding my value proposition to employers and utilised the skill of his team to think more broadly about roles that might be of interest. I was particularly impressed with Gareth’s commitment to keeping in touch to provide feedback at each stage of the process, to ensure both cultural and skill fit. Gareth comes with my heartfelt recommendation and I wish him every success in his new Associate Partner role – well deserved!
Courtney Weston, Learning and Development Manager - MS Amlin
I worked with Gareth on a very tricky recruitment and I must say I was impressed by the level of service I got even after some months of looking for suitable candidates. Gareth was extremely persistent in trying to find the right candidate. He always took into account my comments on profiles and adjusted his search, He was also extremely good and efficient at asking for the candidate feedback and my feedback. I highly recommend him.
Flore Cassin - Head of HR, L.E.K. Consulting
“Best HR recruiter in London”
Susannah Jarvis - Human Resources Business Partner, Markit
Having worked with Gareth as both a candidate and a client, I consider him to be a considered, conscientious and exceptionally professional individual who has a genuine interest in helping both candidates and clients find the right match to meet their needs.
Tara Van Zuiden - Performance & Talent Management, RBS
I have worked with Gareth both in terms of supporting my own search for new career opportunities and in locating HR talent to support my needs as a recruiter. I have found Gareth to be very knowledgeable and insightful in matching my talents to the needs of his clients - I never found my experience with Gareth to be a waste of time, indeed quite the opposite. He spent the time to get to know me, my skills and experience and what makes me stand out as a candidate and he operates in much the same way to his client ( as I have been too!). I would have no hesitation in recommending Gareth to HR candidates and potential employers seeking the support of an excellent HR recruiter.
Ann Broughton (CIPD, Managing Director, Broughton HR Consulting Ltd.)
I worked with Gareth and the Oakleaf team very recently. I worked with many recruitment consultants at this time. I was overwhelmed by the level of effort put in and the personal service, it felt like a team effort. Overall I felt as if the options provided to me were because they were right and exciting and not to hit targets. Extremely professional and highly recommended.
Joanne Payne, Head of Talent Development at Clear Channel International
Gareth assisted me with my job search when my interim assignment at Control Risks ended. He was really quick to get the ball rolling and met with me early on to understand my search goals. He then appropriately matched those to opportunities that he was working on. Throughout the recruitment process Gareth was supportive, responsive and efficient and was great at building good rapport so I was confident that he would match my goals with the roles and companies that he was working with. I look forward to working with Gareth in the future.
Victoria Cole - Placed Candidate
Gareth helped me find an HR role that was just what I was looking for. He listened to me, was very focused on getting me what I wanted and kept me informed all the way through. I was very pleased with his service and would absolutely use him again.
Cara Fallon - HR Business Partner, CLS Group
"I have worked with Gareth now for quite a while as a candidate in the recruitment market, and found him to be one of the most reliable, well informed, and well connected individuals in the London recruitment space. Highly personable, well presented and diligent in his assessment of both client and candidate suitability he has always presented roles that are suitable to my skills and future requirements. He has been a pleasure to work with in a difficult market and i would not hesitate in recommending him to anyone seeking their next role.”
Christopher Hunt - Principle Resourcing Specialist at Santander UK
I recently worked with Gareth, whilst looking for my next HR opportunity. Gareth’s approach was invaluable. He clearly has an excellent understanding of the market and offered me pragmatic, honest advice which really made a positive difference to my career planning. On this occasion the role I secured was not through Oakleaf, but Gareth’s integrity and proactive approach mean that I would not hesitate to recommend him and would certainly employ his services again in the future.
